Course Description:
This is a seventh grade English Language Arts core course based on the four Language Theory modalities of: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; specifically for language learners. This course will apply standard based instruction for the intended purposes of: providing intense reading development, core developmental writing, grammar practice, academic/content rich vocabulary development, as well as partner or group activities to facilitate English language acquisition in a comfortable and organized classroom setting. Lastly, all students will get valuable speaking opportunities in formal and informal speaking throughout the entire school year.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will be able to read and analyze; complex narratives and informational anchor texts; including Greek myths, short stories, culturally diverse poems, informational articles, folktales, dramas, memoirs, speeches, and personal essays. Additionally, the students will be able to compare a variety of texts such as: online news articles, editorials, T.V. news interviews, sonnets, magazine articles, documentaries, and historical writing. Furthermore, the students will be given explicit California Standards instruction in the various genres of writing, i.e., fictional narrative, argumentative writing, summary, personal narrative, poetry analysis, multimedia presentation, and informative essay. Classroom Behavior/Rules:
Discipline Policy:
I believe in establishing a teacher, parent and student partnership to promote positive behavior in the classroom. I expect all students to follow the classroom and school rules everyday.
The students will be given three verbal reminders to follow Rule #1 listed above. If your student’s behavior does not improve, then you will be notified at the end of the school day by the teacher.
I suggest that parents/guardians discuss any unwanted behavior with your student as soon as possible in order to avoid further consequences.
I suggest that parents/guardians contact me via the school email address (see above), the school telephone, or by a handwritten note indicating to me that you have spoken to your student about the situation that we are trying to resolve together as partners.
I hope that by working together we can all have a successful school year.
Thank you for your cooperation.
